Thinking Styles - left versus right

Are you a left or right brain thinker?

I am predominantly a right brain thinker however am quite evenly split across both.

How do you know this?

When looking at thinking styles I completed 3 short tests:

1. Thinking Styles (http://psychologia.co/types-of-thinking/)

2. Which side of your brain is more dominant? (www.ipn.at/ipn.asp?BHX)

3. Brain Dominance Test (http://psychologia.co/types-of-thinking/)

Below is my findings from these.

Thinking Styles (Psychologia)

Psychologia's thinking style assessment produced my preferred thinking types as per above.

It believes I have strong preference towards Orator, thinking in terms of words and logic (Psychologia 2018). Orators are also able to form ideas and deliver them in clear formats (Psychologia 2018).

My second and third preferred styles are the inventor and original. Two creative styles that are around visioning, imagining and uncommon creative solutions (Pschologia 2018).

Finally, my non preferred styles are the Does and Analyst that are practically and analytically focused (Pschologia 2018).

Which side of your Brain is more dominant? (Sommer and sommer).

How does your dominant thinking style help or hinder you in your daily life?

The theory was that people are either left-brained or right-brained, meaning that one side of your brain in more dominant in thinking than the other (Healthline 2018).

This theory first came to light in the 1960's as a result of research undertaken by Nobel Prize winner Roger W Sperry (Healthline 2018).

According to Sperry's research the left brain is connected to logic, sequencing, linear thinking, maths, facts and thinking in words, whilst the right is connected to imagination, holistic thinking, intuition, arts, rhythm, feelings visualisation and daydreaming (Healthline 2018).

In 2013 a team of neuroscientists set out to test this premise (Nielsen J A et al 2013). After a two year analysis they found no proof this theory was correct and that the brain doesn't favour one side or the other (Nielsen J A et al 2013). The two sides function differently but work together an dare tied together by bundles of nerve fibres (Nielsen J A et al 2013). An example of this is the ;eft side is good with language but the right side understands context and tone (Healthline 2018).

Therefore, I do not think this either helps or hinders my daily life but I think its beneficial to be aware of all our brains can achieve. I think if you were to believe the old theory that you are a more dominant side thinker this could be very limiting as it would box your ability into certain areas.

What are your plans for developing your thinking style in a certain area, if any?

For me, when it comes to developing my thinking style its all about broadening my horizons. Listening more, learning more and experiencing more. It's about taking on new challenges and observing how I respond. It is about going to performances and experiences that may not appear to be "my thing" and hoping to find inspiration. It's about being open to growth, change and flexibility.

Do you think you have a particular personality type? And how does knowledge of this help you when it comes to things creative?

I actually don't believe I have a particular personality type. I appear extroverted in a room but restore myself when I'm alone. I am very dependant on the day, the situation and people I am interacting with. Some days I feel closed some days I feel open.
